Morphology is used most of the time to handle large, complex, long-lasting (more than 10 years) systems that involve many people. The main topic of Engineering Support is to coordinate the participants and provide each engineer with an environment (also known as a working space) so that they can work independently during the work period. The former is classified as team work support, while the latter is often referred to as workspace support.

Many parallel workspaces may contain or change the same objects (files), so the introduction of Cooperative Work Support; therefore, it is necessary to synchronize these objects and control the parallel work. Since the activity can last for a long time (meaning that the files will be locked for too long and severe lockups occur), it is also important to address these issues. Merge rule systems can be used to synchronize objects.
